Computer games makers Poptacular, the company behind the popular ‘100 Pics Quiz’, decided to start off as they meant to go on and outsource their accounts from the very beginning. Right from their launch in 2013 the company engaged the services of a Xero accountant to undertake their VAT returns, handle their accounts, as well as payroll and bookkeeping. When their original accountant emigrated they went looking for another Xero accountancy practice and that’s when they came across Approved Accounting.
Here we talk to Poptacular’s founder James DuBern about their decision to work with us:
Why did you choose to outsource your accounts to Approved Accounting?
A fixed monthly price was a major requirement for us in choosing a new accountant and they needed to fulfil all the same duties as our previous one. We also felt that using an accountant who used Xero accounting services would make the transition easier. Approved Accounting were an obvious choice as they matched all our requirements and do as much as possible digitally rather than with hard copies. I like the paperless approach but also find it convenient that we are based close enough that I can pop into the office if necessary.
What do you like about working with Approved Accounting?
As well as the convenience of being able to take pictures and scans of documents to email across rather than finding a postage stamp and an envelope, I also like the fact that they are a small team so can relate to small, growing businesses. I also like their quick response times and the fact that they always get things done as quickly and simply as possible. They’ve also given me advice about corporate structure and financial planning, which I found very useful.
Would you recommend outsourcing your accounts?
Although we’ve had three years of explosive growth as a company, I still consider us to be a start-up. I think it’s vital for companies in this position to run everything as lean as possible and outsource wherever you can. My priority is creating great games and I don’t either myself or my team getting bogged down with day-to-day issues of running the business, which could just as easily be outsourced. The extra business advice is a very valuable bonus.
